One console or two: how vendors package employee AI controls and AI app security

In short

Employee AI controls and AI app security solve different problems, and vendors package them differently. Cato Networks states one engine and one console cover users, applications and agents; Cisco places AI Access inside Secure Access with one console. Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Netskope and Zscaler describe related products whose shared console is not described on the pages we read.

Two jobs, two traffic paths

Employee AI use travels from a person's browser or device to an AI service, usually through whatever security cloud or proxy carries user traffic. AI apps and agents built by the company travel from servers to models and tools, often never touching that path. A vendor can cover both, but it has to put controls in two places. The question for operations teams is whether those two places share one policy, one console and one log.

What the vendors describe

Cato Networks states one AI-native engine and one console cover all three use cases (users, applications and agents), on a platform it describes as having one policy engine and one console.

Cisco describes AI Access as a fully integrated feature set of Cisco Secure Access, which offers a single console, unified client and centralized policy management. Cisco AI Defense, for models and applications, is described on a separate product page.

Palo Alto Networks sells AI Access Security as part of Prisma SASE, managed with Strata Cloud Manager and Strata Copilot, and Prisma AIRS as its own platform for agents, apps, models and data.

Fortinet's Unified SASE is built on a single OS, policy engine and management plane; FortiAIGate is described as a separate, purpose-built control point that can be self-hosted.

Netskope One states one engine, one client, one console and one network; its AI products, such as the Agentic Broker, AI Gateway and AI Guardrails, are presented as a family whose place in that console is not described on the pages we read.

Zscaler lists AI security alongside branch and SSE in its Zero Trust SASE offer; a shared console for AI and network policy is not described on the pages we read.

Why it matters day to day

Two consoles mean two places to write a data rule, two sets of logs to search after an incident and two teams who may not talk. One console means one rule can follow sensitive data whether a person or an agent sends it. Neither is automatically right: a team that builds AI apps may want the app security tool to sit with developers, not with the network team. But the choice should be deliberate, and the vendor's packaging decides how easy each option is.

What to check

Ask to write one data rule, such as no customer identifiers to external models, and apply it to an employee prompt and to an agent's API call. Count the screens. Ask where the two events land in the logs and whether one search finds both. Ask whether licensing is shared or separate.

How the finder uses it

For companies with more than 10,000 people, or many sites and countries, the quiz triggers the check One console for AI and network policy. On the pages we read, Cato Networks and Cisco state it; the other four partly state it.

A note on licensing

Packaging also shows up on the invoice. When employee AI controls and AI app security are separate products, they are often licensed separately, on different units such as users for one and requests or applications for the other. None of the six vendors publishes prices on the pages we read, so ask for both parts to be quoted on the same basis, for the same term, before you compare offers. A single console that requires a second licence for agent controls is still two purchases.
